Travel tips for Koh Yao Yai - Ao Nang

  • Be ready at the boarding point around 30–60 minutes before departure, and ask your accommodation what time you should leave. Koh Yao Yai is a large island, so travel times from different resort areas to the pier can vary considerably.
  • Before departure, make sure the pier name on Koh Yao Yai matches your Booking Confirmation, and do not confuse it with a pier on Koh Yao Noi, especially if your itinerary includes both islands.
  • If you are traveling by speedboat and can choose your seat, travelers who are prone to seasickness may find the middle section of the boat more comfortable. Look toward the horizon rather than down at your phone, and if you want to enjoy the scenery, choose a seat with an outside view rather than standing while the boat is moving.
  • The journey from Koh Yao Yai toward Krabi passes through an area known for limestone islands and the marine scenery of Phang Nga Bay, so the boat ride itself can be part of the travel experience. Keep your camera or phone in an easily accessible bag and consider using a wrist strap to reduce the risk of dropping it.
  • If you plan to continue to Railay Beach after arriving in Ao Nang, check the local boat schedule and transfer point in advance. Allow enough time between services rather than relying too closely on the scheduled arrival time from Koh Yao Yai.
  • If Ao Nang is your first mainland stop after several days of island travel, consider using your first day to restock essentials, reorganize your luggage, or simply take a break from marine activities. Ao Nang offers more shops, restaurants, and services than many smaller islands.
  • Keep a change of clothes, quick-drying clothing, and a small towel in your carry-on bag, especially during rainy weather or when traveling by speedboat. If your clothes get wet from rain or sea spray, you will not need to unpack your main luggage immediately after arrival.
  • If you are traveling with children or elderly passengers, consider the ease of boarding and disembarking as well as the journey time. Let the staff know if assistance is needed, and avoid rushing on or off the boat with large groups, especially when pier surfaces are wet.
  • One of the advantages of Ao Nang is that you do not need to take a boat every day. In addition to Railay and island trips, it can also be used as a base for exploring other parts of Krabi, making it easy to alternate between sea days and land-based sightseeing.
  • Before leaving the island, check the sea conditions, departure time, and final stage of the journey. Some services may not disembark directly in Ao Nang and may instead include a vehicle transfer from another pier, so pay attention to the final arrival time rather than only the boat docking time.
