My wife and I had a wonderful time on our Hug Elephant Sanctuary visit even after there were a few challenges getting started.

No driver showed up in the morning, and when we called we were told they didn't have any tours scheduled that day. Our proof of confirmation email said otherwise and we, indeed scheduled the tour. Despite the mix up, the company quickly sent a driver to pick us up from the hotel and made things right with a private tour. We lost a little bit of time overall from this, but once we got there, our tour guide, Kevin, completely made up for it and we had an incredible experience. 

Kevin was very kind throughout the day, passionate about teaching us everything we wanted to know about the elephants, and went above and beyond by taking a ton of pictures for us we didn't even know we would want until the day was over. We will forever cherish those photos. Kevin even went out of his way, to hand make a flower crown for me to give to my wife for some really awesome pictures. 

Kevin, if you are reading this we want to THANK YOU AGAIN! You're the man. You made the day unforgettable. 

We would overall highly recommend the Hug Elephant Sanctuary.

Awesome experience despite a mix up

I am finished FULL day tour with my group few days ago. I was here many times because I am a tour leader. But earlier I joined only half day tours. Now I see that company is cheating people. We recaived EXACTLY THE SAME service as in a half day tour. So its a regular scam. There was few schedule points about which our „guide” forgot. And it was intencionaly. F.ex. He forgot about trekking to hilltop with elephants.
Firstly we waste about 30 minutes for tea/coffee which we didnt want because it was instant and untasty, then we stand in full sun in the jungle just staring at elephant about an hour. Almost all of us wounded themselves because its very unsafe area. Feeding elephants was about 5 minutes. Then we waste 1 hour for „lunch” which we ate in 10 minutes. So we again sitting under an aweful roof in aweful surrending with plastic rubbish and did nothing. 
Then we spent about 3 minutes in the river with elephants and „guide” told that we need to go away because he has no more food for them. Not even all people had enough time to took photo with elephants. Then running to the waterfall and spending there 10 minutes. That is all, we finished before 2pm and then waited about 1 hour for minivan. About 4pm we were back in Chiang mai. And this is FULL day tour in their opinion. Its a scam and please dont do the same mistake.

- Feed and interact with elephants in their natural environment
- Trek with the elephants to a hilltop with a beautiful view of the surrounding area
- Return to camp to enjoy a delicious Thai meal
- Walk with the elephants down to the river
- Give the elephants a mud bath
- Swim in the waterfalls
- Change into your dry clothes
- 5:00 PM : Arrive back at your hotel or guesthouse

So:
- no elephants history
- guide with extramely poor english skills
- no trek with elephants to a hilltop with a beautiful view of the surrounding area
- no mad bath
- no tour to 4pm (and then 1h back to Cnx).
 
”NO” for about half schedule.
 
When I asked about it a „guide” he told me that he never heard about this schedule (it is on their website), no hilltop view ever before, no mad bath because „almost all their elephants died because of mud bacteria” and if we want longer tour we can seat 1-2 more hours under this aweful roof with no view and do nothing. 
Its riddiculous and it is a regular scam. I paid for something else and they cheated my whole group.
 
I sent them an email and told them to return half payment because they „forgot” about half day schedule and wasted our time - they dont even answer and explain why they are cheating people.

Dont do the same mistake. Choose another sanctuary.

Our van stopped on the road because there was a baby elephant in the premises, and we wanted to take a look from outside. While we were watching, we saw an employee hit the calf with a stick. It was very upsetting and made me question how the animals are treated here. I hope the management takes this seriously and improves animal welfare practices.

I had a fantastic time at the Hug Elephant Sanctuary. The owners/carers genuinely care for the elephants and the bond they have is obvious. It was good to see there were lots of shaded areas provided to protect from the 40 degree heat!
We had the pleasure of meeting a mother and her 3 month old baby. Everything was done to make us as comfortable and at ease with each other as possible. We had a debrief on what to do/not to do and then we met these beautiful creatures. 
First up was feeding time with lots of sugar cane and corn, then a little game of football with little Hugkun showing off her skills! We then had a walk where the guide explained more about the elephants and the work the sanctuary does. Finally bath time followed by more playing and a lovely lunch for the humans! It was obvious these animals were very happy and comfortable in their surroundings and it was an honour to be part of - I would have no hesitation in recommending Hug to anyone! 🐘🩷
