✋🏼They no longer have Pandas (or orangutans) in this Zoo. It would be totally fine, except they DO NOT advertise this on their website or anywhere else - UNTIL you stand there (with three kids) After initially thinking, we'll enter anyways, we asked if Kids zone and the playground was open, but no. SO WE LEFT. I can't say how it is inside, but our experience was disappointing. Apparently the Pandas have been dead for two years. I understand it is difficult to change an entire zoos identity and logo, but at least be honest and advertise truthfully.

🌿🏞️We do recommend going down the road from the zoo and enter the small botanical garden, Huai Kaeo Arboretum
- and even more, walk a bit further and enter Chiang Mai Univeristy's gate and find the truly magnificent nature walk around Angkaew Reservoir.

NO PANDAS 🐼🛑

Really an excellent option for a nice walk though a tropical forest. From the point of view of animal seeing, surely there may be better zoos around the world, but there are nice animals to see.
Do it by walking to emerge in the ambience, don't use the carts. If the walk turn out to be too long, there are lots of shortcuts back to the entrance.
Some visitors complain about that there are no decent restaurants there, but hey, we are in Thailand, and there are plenty of stalls offering nice Thai food. (I don't know why some people travel around the world and expect to get 5 star international cousine everywhere ....)
Cost is reasonable: THB 350 per person. 
Surely worth a visit !!!


Excellent option for a walk

Arrived to the zoo optimistic but soon took a turn when I stepped into the zoo and seen the state it was in. The only word I can use was depressing.
99% of the animals were all sat alone in the small enclosures staring at 3 walls and the glass. 
The lion who looked unhealthy and depressed, with barely a mane left, was sat staring at the cage door. 
Only seen one elephant far away from any other enclosures when elephants are a very sociable animal and should be in herds. 
The enclosures looked poorly maintained and outdated. Barely seen any staff around the further you walked into the zoo. A good number of enclosures were closed.
The only good thing about the experience was the aquarium but that was not hard to satisfy anyone when you are after walking through such a sad and poorly kept zoo.
Would not recommend this zoo to anyone as you will leave very disappointed and feeling sorry for the animals being kept there!!

Horrible and depressing

Probably the worst zoo we have been to. 
Very few animals and many areas closed. 
Golf cart rental by the hour would cost even more if there were animals to stop and view.

Waste of time and money.

Welcomed to gate to be told:-

1. Oh by the way Panda die. He die 9 month ago. 

2. Also Aquarium closed. Do you mind?

Well as it’s Chiang Mai Zoo & Aquarium yes we did mind. Nevertheless. As ever optimistic brits we pressed on. 

That however, was where the optimism began to dwindle. 

Rented a golf cart, they charge them out per hour and they’re the slowest things imaginable.  If you go over the hour they charge you again. Which is easily done when it takes an hour just to see the 6 animals they do have alive and visible.

Now to the nitty gritty. Not only was the panda, snow centre and aquarium closed. Also the bird centre, the tigers and leopards closed. The hippos weren’t there. The poor orangutan was hiding by his indoor enclosure door clearly wanting to be out of the sun just baking there.

It’s a very sad state of affairs. Most of the animals are kept solitary which just broke our hearts. 

1 lemur, 1 crocodile, 1 macaque, 1 orangutan, 1 gibbon, 1 rhino, 1 koala, 1 red panda. Just off the top of my head. 

I won’t list the Reticulated Python or the other naturally solitary animals.  
I honestly think they’d be better off rehoming or putting them to sleep. What an unimaginable existence. 

We did see 3 lions which looked pretty healthy.- that was about it.

10/10 not worth the visit. Save your money, we only attended as we wanted to see a panda in real life. “He dead”. Could put that out there not still advertise it.
